Predicting a Happier Place

چکیده
In communities with higher well-being, people live longer and more productive lives, and local economies flourish. In an effort to improve understanding of what leads to vibrant communities and fulfilling lifestyles, our project explored community-level factors and their significance for determining well-being in Americas largest metropolitan areas. We hypothesized that the frequency of points of interests (POIs) in a community as well as basic macro-level factors were sufficiently accurate indicators of well-being. Thus, the input to our algorithm was POI frequencies and economic/social factors for each metro area. We then used Logistic Regression, Extra-Trees Classifier, and Support Vector Machines to output a prediction of whether a metro area is of high or low wellbeing.

Location-sharing services were built upon people’s desire to share their activities and locations with others. By“checkingin” to a place, such as a restaurant, a park, gym, or train station, people disclose where they are, thereby providing valuable information about land use and utilization of services in urban areas. This information may, in turn, be used to design smarter, happier, more equi...

People who recall or forecast many pleasant moments should perceive themselves as happier in the past or future than people who generate few such moments; the same principle should apply to generating unpleasant moments and perceiving unhappiness. Five studies suggest that this is not always true. Rather, people's metacognitive experience of ease of thought retrieval ("fluency") can affect perc...

متن کاملSun and water: on a modulus-based measurement of happiness.
Most happiness researchers use semantic differential or Likert scales to assess happiness. Such conventionally used scales are susceptible to scale renorming (interpretation of scales differently in different contexts) and can produce a specious relativism effect (e.g., rating a low-income person happier than a high-income person in situations where the low-income person is not happier). Buildi...
